American Girl is introducing Luciana Vega, the 2018 Girl of the Year. She comes with an out-of-this-world storyline about an 11-year-old who dreams of being the first person on Mars. American Girl worked with NASA, including a task force of advisors (scientists, astronauts, and more below) who helped ensure the accuracy and authenticity of Luciana’s world—from her story and products to a STEM-based educational program in partnership with Scholastic and Space Camp.

Looking beyond her cool line of space-inspired products (like a Mars habitat and flight suit!), American Girl’s purpose behind this character is what’s most important. Luciana shows what it can mean to be a girl of strong character today, where creative thinking, collaboration, and STEM literacy provide opportunities for meaningful growth and development. Technology continues to revolutionize what we do and what we know, and Luciana is a character that can bring visibility and valuable lessons to girls at a time in their lives when they’re learning about their infinite potential to change the world.

Bringing this story to life is an all-star advisory board that includes: Dr. Ellen Stofan, former NASA Chief Scientist, Dr. Deborah Barnhart, CEO and Executive Director of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Maureen O’Brien, Manager of Strategic alliances at NASA, and Dr. Megan McArthur Behnken, NASA Astronaut.

To celebrate her launch, AG is hosting Luciana debut events at its retail locations nationwide on January 1. The event features interactive science demonstrations, a Moon Phase craft, galaxy-inspired treats, and a free Luciana doll tee to take home. For more details, visit americangirl.com/retail .

  1. As a first generation Latina and a grandmother of a beautiful grand daughter I am always searching for ways to make sure my grandchildren always know that in their roots runs Hispanic/Latina blood. Why would this be important? Because of the beautiful tapestry of cultures which exist in each and everyone of our countries. Our language, which mainly stems from Latin roots, our foods, spices and colors of our clothing and food are very diverse. We are so different, yet so similar and in understanding and accepting these differences they will be able to admire and continue to pass along their Latino culture to their own children and somehow keep the connection to our heritage. But my greatest desire is that via the understanding and experiences of this collection of cultures our world will become more accepting and loving of cultural diversity.

  2. I would love to win for my daughter. She is obsessed with American Girl and Luciana is at the top of her list. We just got the new catalog in the mail 2 days ago and Luciana and her entire collection (especially the space suit and Mars habitat!) is circled and stared for her birthday list.

  3. My daughter is a fan of American Girl and her STEM classes at school! We also built our first droid at home! She’s such a super smartie and straight A student. She makes me so proud. We have conversations about high aspirations and making your dreams come true. I hope for great success for all of those girls out there who dream big! Thanks for this opportunity!

  4. Oh my goodness!!! My daughter and I are in love with Luciana! My grandfather retired from NASA. He worked for NASA in AL, TX and in FL for many years so our family has a great love for all things NASA, STEM and space…..I went to Space Camp in Alabama when I was 12 and I can’t wait for my kids to go.
My daughter recently became a huge American Girl fan and we both squealed when I got the email announcing Luciana. She immediately asked for her as a present for her birthday in March.

  5. My little girls birthday is coming up. We’re a multi cultural family and she wants a doll that “Looks just like her.” Luciana fits the bill in every way! Such a precious doll would be perfect for MY precious little doll ❤️

  6. We vacation on the “space coast,” aka, Cocoa Beach, and we’ve been lucky to see several rocket launches. My girls love this new doll!

  7. I would love to win this doll for my daughter. I think it’s important for girls to know they can do it be anything they want to be. To think higher than the sky.

  8. My girls would LOVE this doll! We believe girls are strong and American Girl Dolls help by showing support in that belief. You can do anything you put your mind (and heart) into!
