American Girl is introducing Luciana Vega, the 2018 Girl of the Year. She comes with an out-of-this-world storyline about an 11-year-old who dreams of being the first person on Mars. American Girl worked with NASA, including a task force of advisors (scientists, astronauts, and more below) who helped ensure the accuracy and authenticity of Luciana’s world—from her story and products to a STEM-based educational program in partnership with Scholastic and Space Camp.
Looking beyond her cool line of space-inspired products (like a Mars habitat and flight suit!), American Girl’s purpose behind this character is what’s most important. Luciana shows what it can mean to be a girl of strong character today, where creative thinking, collaboration, and STEM literacy provide opportunities for meaningful growth and development. Technology continues to revolutionize what we do and what we know, and Luciana is a character that can bring visibility and valuable lessons to girls at a time in their lives when they’re learning about their infinite potential to change the world.
Bringing this story to life is an all-star advisory board that includes: Dr. Ellen Stofan, former NASA Chief Scientist, Dr. Deborah Barnhart, CEO and Executive Director of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Maureen O’Brien, Manager of Strategic alliances at NASA, and Dr. Megan McArthur Behnken, NASA Astronaut.
To celebrate her launch, AG is hosting Luciana debut events at its retail locations nationwide on January 1. The event features interactive science demonstrations, a Moon Phase craft, galaxy-inspired treats, and a free Luciana doll tee to take home. For more details, visit americangirl.com/retail .
This is awesome!
Like all the other folks here, my daughter is obsessed with American Girl dolls. Luciana is the first doll to me that seems to inspire young girls to dream big and embrace their intelligence and passion for STEM subjects. My fish haters favorite subjects right now are science and math – would love to keep her passionate about those subjects as well!
Luciana represents a adventure. A lot like my daughter she is very girly but at the same time loves science, math adventure. Thanks AG for always giving girls postive roles.
My girl wold absolutely love this doll. She turns 5 on the 24th and is at a point she is obsessed with American Girl. Aside from that my girl loves science, science experiments, and anything to do with space. She would love the fact that there is an American Girl that dreams of space because one of the things my girl wants to be when she grows up is an astronaut.
My soon-to-be 9 year old daughter has loved STEM endeavors since she was in Pre-K. She wants to be a scientist (and mommy) when she grows up, and her favorite toys are toys science kits, circuit board kits, GoldiBlox, a telescope, and a microscope. I love that this doll encourages STEM and nurturing.
Luciana would be a great first American Girl to own! I’ve always been a big American Girl fan, but haven’t gotten the chance to own a doll yet. As a young teacher, the little girls I work with would be endlessly inspired by Luciana. She’s the perfect example of believing in yourself – especially where maths and science are concerned.
My daughter turns 5 next week and she loves everything about outer space. One of her favorite shows is Cosmos and her favorite t-shirt has the solar system on it. She wants to be a rocket scientist (or a lifeguard–depends on the day!) when she grows up. She would love this doll!
Don’t know if the girls would get this or if they would give her to me! She is adorable and has some awesome hobbies. She would fit in well in our house, where anything space goes! I’m a rocket scientist and my girls are as much in love with space as me, and absolutely love AG and have a huge collection of their books.
I’d love to win for my niece! I like that they’re giving their dolls such great stories!
My 10 year old’s name is Lucy! She would love to have a doll sharing her name and also has a love for being a leader and explore new territory! 💞
