American Girl is introducing Luciana Vega, the 2018 Girl of the Year. She comes with an out-of-this-world storyline about an 11-year-old who dreams of being the first person on Mars. American Girl worked with NASA, including a task force of advisors (scientists, astronauts, and more below) who helped ensure the accuracy and authenticity of Luciana’s world—from her story and products to a STEM-based educational program in partnership with Scholastic and Space Camp.
Looking beyond her cool line of space-inspired products (like a Mars habitat and flight suit!), American Girl’s purpose behind this character is what’s most important. Luciana shows what it can mean to be a girl of strong character today, where creative thinking, collaboration, and STEM literacy provide opportunities for meaningful growth and development. Technology continues to revolutionize what we do and what we know, and Luciana is a character that can bring visibility and valuable lessons to girls at a time in their lives when they’re learning about their infinite potential to change the world.
Bringing this story to life is an all-star advisory board that includes: Dr. Ellen Stofan, former NASA Chief Scientist, Dr. Deborah Barnhart, CEO and Executive Director of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Maureen O’Brien, Manager of Strategic alliances at NASA, and Dr. Megan McArthur Behnken, NASA Astronaut.
To celebrate her launch, AG is hosting Luciana debut events at its retail locations nationwide on January 1. The event features interactive science demonstrations, a Moon Phase craft, galaxy-inspired treats, and a free Luciana doll tee to take home. For more details, visit americangirl.com/retail .
My niece in PR would love this American Girl doll for her birthday, especially since there is no AG stores. I could send it with a few other AG extras!
My daughter is a huge AG fan and her birthday is Feb 23rd. This would be an awesome gift for her!
I’m a huge fan of your blog!!!thanks for sharing
Thank you very much for the chance to win, I entered on instagram! My daughter is already in love with Luciana and has her on her “want” list! I love that she is into space and science.
My 6-year-old daughter currently loves all things science. Her Christmas list included a science kit, chemistry lab, doctor’s office with a working stethoscope, and play rocket ship. I loved that it wasn’t the usual list of popular toys! She dreams of being a scientist, science teacher, vet, or an architect one day. I love that these aren’t the usual jobs that young kids dream of pursuing. Yesterday, she spent 3 hours coloring a science book coloring book that the school science teacher gave her. She hasn’t picked up her other coloring books (Hello Kitty, Barbie, etc.) in months. My kid isn’t the usual kid and she would LOVE to have Luciana Vega by her side! What a great addition to the American Girl team! I can only imagine the adventures Luciana will take with each girl or boy by her side. Perhaps a backyard mission to Mars? Collecting moon rocks in the front yard? Eating space ice cream on a hot day? This doll can create so many imaginative possibilities. I’m sure the first mission she and my daughter would take together would be to play with that toy rocket ship she got for Christmas! And I would absolutely love that!
My daughter would absolutely love this doll!!
My daughter and I would love to bring Luciana home. My kids love learning about outer space and we love her collection. Her Mars habitat is especially awesome! Thanks for a chance to win. I entered through Instagram too.
I’d love to win her because my husband is an engineer and he is trying to encourage our daughter to go into the sciences.
The partnership between American Girl and NASA is so exciting! Because of Luciana, I am taking my children to the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL this Spring!
What an amazing partnership! My daughter is obsessed with space. She will absolutely love this doll.
