April is full of festivities: some yummy, some funny, and some that will remind us all the importance of giving back. These Everyday Holidays will make sure you and your families will have new discoveries together throughout the month.

This month we have some delicious celebrations: a lunchtime favorite for Peanut Butter and Jelly Day, and the classic salty snack on National Pretzel Day. Did you know that there is a pretzel museum in Pennsylvania? While we don’t have a museum for pretzels here in Orlando, you can get your fill at lots of local spots, such as the Amish Pretzels food truck. For Grilled Cheese Day, try changing up the classic cheddar for a new star and helping your kids expand their taste buds. Kids of all ages will enjoy helping you make this simple sandwich and tasting new kinds of cheese.

International Plant Appreciation Day, Earth Day, and Arbor Day all fall in April; during a month full of flora appreciation, what better place to be than Mead Gardens in Winter Park. As a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting the community with nature, they offer a beautiful landscape to roam, including butterfly gardens, a community garden, and a greenhouse.

For a special celebration of Arbor Day that will last a lifetime, you can get your very own tree to plant in your yard from the city for free! Orlando’s One Person, One Tree program aims to create a cooler, greener city by providing residents with trees to plant on their property. All you have to do is visit the Arbor Day Foundation’s page for energy-saving trees and they will help you get your tree! What a wonderful way to include your kids in making Orlando a more beautiful place to live.

April is also National Poetry Month, and it includes Poem in Your Pocket Day and Great Poetry Reading Day. Have fun with your kids picking out poems to read together and choosing one special poem to carry around with you all day. National Children’s Book Day —which is not only for little ones—is also this month, as is National Library Workers’ Day, which is a perfect opportunity to make a sweet card for our favorite librarians while we pick out a story to bring home.

It is never too early to show kids the value of caring about your neighbor, and celebrating Global Youth Service Day is a great place to start. Hands On Orlando is a wonderful organization that offers volunteer opportunities for whole families with no long-term commitment—even children as young as four years old can help with some projects!
