We all know that change doesnโ€™t happen overnight. It happens gradually โ€“ day by day, week by week, month by month. And now that a new year stands before us, we are challenging you to gradually build up your life. The monthly Build Up Challenge is an effort to focus on small changes throughout each day, week and month, and building up these small actions over time will lead to significant changes in our lives.

At Orlando Mom, we started 2024 off with intentionally building up positive habits that will help our well-being and allow us to build up our families and homes too.

Each month, we are going to share and challenge you to work on five habits for the month โ€“ one for each of these areas of life:

  1. Mindfulness
  2. Physical Wellness
  3. Emotional Wellness
  4. Family
  5. Home

It is our sincerest hope that you will join us and other moms throughout Central Florida by reading about these monthly habits and finding ways that work for you to implement them into your life.

We will be sharing reminders on our Facebookย andย Instagram for these habits. Weโ€™ll ask how you are doing tackling each challenge and we want to hear from you so that we can share your progress and help motivate others.

Check out each challenge for the year so far:

THE APRIL CHALLENGE!

Mindfulness โ€“ Practice Box Breathing

Box breathing can help you feel more relaxed, grounded, and reset.ย It can also help with stress reduction, anxiety management, improved focus, and better sleep quality.ย
The 4 box breathing technique, also known as square breathing or Sama Vritti Pranayama, is a breathing exercise that involves four steps:
  1. Inhale:ย Slowly inhale through your nose while counting to four.ย You can place your hands on your belly to feel it expand.
  2. Hold:ย Hold your breath for a count of four.
  3. Exhale:ย Slowly exhale through your mouth while counting to four.
  4. Repeat:ย Repeat steps 1โ€“3 for as long as you want.ย
Here are some tips for practicing box breathing:ย
    • Sit in a comfortable chair with your back supported and your feet on the floor.ย
    • Close your eyes.ย
  • Try to avoid straining your breathing.ย
  • Be aware of how the air fills your lungs and stomach.ย
  • Visualize each four-count as a side of a box.ย
  • You can try counting to three instead of four if the technique is challenging.ย
  • You can try repeating an affirmation while breathing, such as “Mississippi” or “I feel so calm”

Physical Wellness โ€“ Do a Squat Challenge

Emotional Wellness โ€“ Date Night with Partner

Date nights can have many benefits for couples, like strengthening emotional connection.ย Date nightsย can help you spend uninterrupted time with your partner, which can boost your emotional connection and reduce stress! They can help you get out and have fun, but also give you time to share thoughts and feelings. The most important part of dates night is setting an example for the kids by showing your kids the importance of valuing relationships.ย

Family โ€“ Date Your Kids

Dating your kids is a way to spend quality time with them, strengthen your relationship, and help them develop healthy social skills.
Some tips for dating your kids:ย
  • Put your phone away and be present.
  • Let your inner child out and have fun.
  • Buy a souvenir from each date as a memento.

I love to take my kids out to eat for quality time together…we get to talk and laugh with no other interruptions!ย

Home โ€“ Deep Clean the Bathroom

One by one, room by room, this house is getting cleaned up! Doing a DEEP clean in the bathroom is daunting. But clean grout, dust off the light bulbs and a sparkling tub are refreshing! While toilets and sinks are easy everyday cleaning, the deeper stuff seems to be the “ick” chore for me.

This is it! this is the Building Up Challenge for April!

Let’s work on the Building Up Challenge together until April 30! Then, weโ€™ll be back with 5 new habits for May. Remember to comment on our social media posts with how you are doing, we’d love to encourage you and share with others too!
