For most moms, a dryer is a staple appliance at home. We can’t imagine washing our clothes and not transferring them to a dryer afterward. For other moms, a dryer has never been part of their routines- but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t come in handy. If you’ve been wondering whether having a dryer would make your home life easier or whether it’s more hassle than it’s worth, you’ve come to the right place. From one mom to another, my tips below will help you to decide whether a dryer should join your washing machine or whether you can keep on going just fine without one.
If you’ve been thinking of replacing your dryer because your old one isn’t as good as it used to be, you can buy replacement parts online (been there, done that!). If your dryer is from a popular brand like GE Appliances, it’ll be easy for you to find the right parts for a GE dryer and prolong the life of your current appliance… and ultimately save money. Since GE dryers are efficient and long-lasting, it’ll be better for you to maintain your current appliance rather than buy a new one from an inferior brand (my husband swears by a “name brand” for appliances).
Faster drying in colder months
One of the main reasons that people buy a dryer is because of how quickly it gets to work…and because we can’t imagine waiting days for our clothes to dry on the line when the weather is cold and wet. Air drying isn’t always practical when you need fresh bedding or towels right away. If you often run out of clothes (or have a toddler that changes multiple times a day), waiting for them to dry would be like watching paint dry!a A dryer could be well worth your time and money if you have little kids.
Lack of space
Big families would struggle to dry all their clothes around the house. There would have garments hanging off every available door or hook after laundry day…at that point, you might want to invest in a dryer. While you would have to do multiple loads, you’ll be able to dry everything your family needs much more efficiently.
Delicate clothes
One thing that dryers don’t do particularly well with is delicate clothing. If you have lots of delicates or silk blouses that you wash regularly, you wouldn’t be able to put these in the dryer. There’s also always the risk that your clothes might shrink when you put them in the dryer (hello, it’s me), even if they are dryer safe. You’d have to be willing to accept this or continue drying your clothes on a line outside if you’d prefer to be cautious.
Cost
Dryers might be convenient, but they will increase your energy bills considerably if you’re using them regularly. If cost is a concern for you but a dryer is a necessity, then think about getting one that has a high energy efficiency rating. However, the most cost-effective way of drying your clothes is on a maiden or outside when the weather is nice.
Environmental impact
Because dryers use more energy, they also have a bigger impact on the environment. If you’re trying to be as eco-friendly as possible, you may decide to avoid dryers altogether. However, it’s important to remember that nobody is perfect when it comes to reducing their environmental impact, so just do the best you can.
