Over the last decade, our kids have been exposed to opportunities like never before. Especially with the introduction of the S.T.E.M programs in our schools, our kids have the chance to explore their passion for Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
This has been the case for my middle child, Drew.
Ever since Drew was in Kindergarten, he has wanted to be an aeronautical engineer. In middle school, he took flight and aviation-based classes, and now in high school, he is in a dual-enrollment course with Embry-Riddle University.
When I learned about a local company called Top Dronz, I was very intrigued (and so was my son)! Top DronzTM, located in Altamonte Springs is a place to “Learn, Fly, Race, Meet-Up, and Buy First Person View (FPV) Drones”.
We decided to make a birthday party out of our experience, and invited a few of Drew’s friends (and of course the girlfriend!).
The experience started off with a chance to get familiar with the drone controller. This is pretty much like a computer game controller and experience, but it teaches the user the basics of how to control the drone.

Once you’re comfortable with the controller, it’s time to FLY! Goggles are provided to give you a first-person flying experience.

The course is set up as an obstacle course, with the goal to fly through tunnels and lit up targets. The mini drones are battery operated, and the staff is close by to replace the battery when they run out of power. Drew’s headset even recorded his flight. Check it out!

The Top Dronz store serving the community of Altamonte Springs, FL is a new concept that combines the experiences:
- learning to fly micro-FPV drones through the use of simulators and an in-store obstacle course track
- in-store flying of micro-FPV drones that help you develop your flying skills or just have fun
- events and late night ‘whooping’, whether a birthday party, a small group field trip, a corporate event that supports team building, or just getting together with a bunch of friends
- retail sales of starter FPV drones from Tiny Whoop, and UVify, maker of the OOri considered to be the world’s smartest FPV racing drone and the Draco HD, which is a highly optimized, flight ready racing, freestyling and extreme aerial cinematography drone
- FAA Part 107 license course so that you can do more with your drone
Once you become a Top Dronz certified ‘racer’, you will have the opportunity to participate in local, regional, and national FPV drone racing events. These events are planned to be organized on a monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual basis, where ‘certified’ Top Dronz drone pilots of various skill levels will be able to compete for cash and prizes.
