I got my wish- cold weather. The problem is that I can’t really function in cold weather. I am a Florida girl through and through and anything below 73 means I am cold. My wish for cold weather stems from the brutal 100 degree summer temps. I long for hygge, and when these cold temps arrive, I don’t want to leave my house which makes embracing hygge even easier! While I am in the season of focusing on my mental health, I am also going to embrace the Florida girl hygge season.
Hygge is a Danish word for a quality of cosiness (feeling warm, comfortable, and safe) that comes from doing simple things such as lighting candles, baking, or spending time at home with family. In 2019, hygge became “mainstream” on social media and Pinterest…you could find so much about it. But if you haven’t heard of it or embraced the Dane’s season of hygge, then these tips are for you!
How to embrace Florida girl hygge this winter:
- Invest in Cozy Blankets: surround yourself with soft, warm blankets for a comforting atmosphere.
We have blankets all over our house, so it is easy to snuggle up and relax with one.
- Enjoy Candlelight: create a soothing ambiance with flickering candles in your space.
I love candles while I am working or laying in bed.
- Delight in Hot Beverages: enjoy hot cocoa, tea, or mulled wine to warm your soul.
Hot tea before bed is my favorite way to unwind!
- Dive into Reading: snuggle up with a good book or your favorite magazine.
I have a HUGE “to read” list for 2024! I’m working on it daily!
- Wear Warm Sweaters: bundle up in your coziest sweaters and socks.
I wear sweaters to sleep sometimes! I love a big, warm, cozy sweater!
- Cook Homemade Comfort Food: prepare hearty, homemade meals like stews and soups.
The crockpot is my bestie this time of year! Soups, chilli, beans etc. You can’t go wrong!
- Get Some Indoor plants: bring the outdoors in with greenery to add a touch of nature.
I have lots of faux plants all over the house, but I also have lots of snake plants, pothos and friendship plants that I propagate regularly too!
- Listen to Music: play calming tunes to set a tranquil mood.
I love to listen to music while I work and walk.
- Play Board Games: gather loved ones for game nights to foster connection.
Our kids have lots of games, so game time is always fun because there are a bunch to choose from.
- Start a Gratitude Journaling Practice: take time to reflect on the positive aspects of life to promote contentment.
I dove back into this practice again. It is nice to be able to reflect on the things I am grateful for everyday.
