Legacy Fitness is a gym in Winter Park with a nice, neighborhood feel. Owned and operated by a momma of three, it’s like a normal gym with treadmills, stationary bikes, a mat area, weight machines and free weights, but set apart by their boxing ring and the variety of classes they offer including boxing, kickboxing, TRX suspension training and quite a few more including RECON, a class with obstacles and running. If you’ve signed up for a mud run and are looking for a class to train for obstacles, this is it.
The staff and the instructors are very friendly and welcoming and it seems there are always new faces walking in the door, as well as the regulars.
The first class is free and after that it’s $15/class for a drop-in rate. Most go with the $59/month for unlimited classes and use of the gym during open hours. You can also take advantage of $5 Fridays, when each class is only $5.
I took two classes. I started with the cardio boxing class which was a really great entire body workout. I was unsure if I would like it since I had never boxed before. During the class, we did a series of 100 different punch sequences on a heavy bag (such as right jab, left jab, right uppercut, left hook, etc…) and then 200 jumping jacks or 60 jump squats or mountain climbers, then back to punches. Afterwards, a run outside and then ab work. To my surprise, I really enjoyed the class and was sweating profusely with my friend, Nicole. My arms and legs were really feeling the workout two days later — in a good way! We loved our instructor, Franciso “The Wizard” Palacios, a professional boxer!
I also took the kickboxing class. I took kickboxing in high school, college and at my YMCA throughout the years, so I wasn’t nervous. This was a bit different in that I had never used a heavy bag for my kicks and punches. It hurt my shins in the beginning, but I got used to it. This was also a cardio class where we did kicks and punches but then we also threw in ab work, running, squats, lunges, burpees and mountain climbers. I was drenched with sweat when it was over, but I loved every minute of it! I had Chris as my instructor for this class and he was full of energy!
