I have a newly found love for exercise classes. Having been an athlete as a child, teen and college student, I have been a work out fanatic all of my adult life. Prior to baby, I was a runner and a gym rat, spending an hour sometimes two exercising. It kept me sane. I have always been self-motivated and rather enjoyed choreographing new exercise routines to challenge myself.

Well, fast-forward two years. I am now two years postpartum. For the past 1.5 years I have attempted to return to my pre-pregnancy routine of running and lifting weights. I found that the old routine just hasn’t been working for me anymore. I have been unable to loose that last 5lbs. I have discovered myself to be more “squishy” in areas that I never was before. In the gym, I found myself more distracted. I no longer had 1 to 2 hours a day to exercise. I didn’t have the energy or the time to plan out my exercise routine several days in advance. I was having a harder time staying motivated on my own. I needed more “bang for my buck”. I was getting frustrated.

After some encouragement from the director of the gym I belong to, I started some classes. It was amazing. I felt energized again. Not only were the classes at my gym challenging and well organized, but they also provided an excellent opportunity to meet other mommas who enjoy challenging themselves to stay physically fit and healthy!

My favorite classes are high intensity interval classes that combine aerobic activities with weight lifting intermittently to burn calories and build and tone muscle. I still run throughout the week on the days that I can’t make it to the gym, but I no longer have to worry about coming up with an elaborate exercise plan. That leaves me more time to worry about what to make for dinner!

Why exercise classes are good for moms:

  1. You don’t have to create a work out ahead of time. No preplanning. You can just show up and be directed to the exercise routine for the day.
  2. You don’t have to self-motivate. The instructor does a great job of keeping you on your toes with motivation. The other women and men in the class can also motivate you to push yourself.
  3. You have a standing date and time, so there is more accountability.
  4. There is variety. You are not doing the same workout over and over again.
  5. It is a way to meet new people with similar interests.
