As I embark on an old and new journey, I wanted to share some of the things I have learned over the years, especially now that my youngest is about to transition to high school. Remember, each child and their experience is different. Enjoy this time with them, and buckle up for a fun ride for the next four years!

Transitioning from middle to high school marks a significant milestone in your child’s academic journey filled with excitement, opportunities, and new challenges. As you prepare for this transition to high school, it’s natural to experience a mix of emotions. However, with the right mindset and preparation, you can effectively support your child for a successful back to school and transition to high school. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate this exciting new chapter.

Get organized early

One of the initial steps in preparing for high school is ensuring your child is organized. Ensure they have all the necessary supplies—notebooks, pens, pencils, folders, and a sturdy backpack. Establishing a dedicated study space at home can also assist them in staying on top of assignments from the outset.

Get familiar with the school

High school campuses can be overwhelming, akin to navigating a small town. Before the first day:

  1. Accompany your child to the school whenever possible.
  2. Use opportunities like ‘meet the teacher’ events to familiarize yourself with the layout.
  3. Locate key areas such as classrooms, the cafeteria, gym, library, and restrooms. This familiarity will help alleviate anxiety and facilitate a smoother adjustment on their first day.

Understand academic expectations

High school academics often present more rigor than middle school’s. Take the time to review the curriculum, graduation requirements, and available course options. Should questions arise regarding schedules or academic expectations, don’t hesitate to contact school counselors or teachers for guidance.

Set realistic goals

Please encourage your child to set realistic goals for themselves, both academically and personally. Whether aiming for specific grades, participating in extracurricular activities, or developing social skills, writing down these goals and breaking them into manageable steps fosters accountability and motivation.

Build relationships

High school offers ample opportunities for your child to forge new friendships and connections with peers, teachers, and staff. Encourage their participation in orientation activities, clubs, sports teams, and school events. Building a supportive network within the school community enhances their overall experience and sense of belonging.

Optimize time management

Balancing academic responsibilities, extracurricular activities, and personal commitments requires effective time management skills. Help your child create a weekly schedule that allocates time for studying, homework, activities, and relaxation. Prioritizing tasks based on deadlines and importance will prevent them from feeling overwhelmed.

Explore extracurricular activities

High school provides diverse extracurricular opportunities — from sports teams to academic clubs, volunteer organizations, and arts programs. Encourage your child to explore their interests and passions by joining activities that align with their goals. Participation enriches their high school experience and fosters skill development and lasting friendships.

Prioritize physical and mental health

Emphasize the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle for academic success and overall well-being. Ensure your child gets adequate sleep, consumes balanced meals, and remains physically active. Encourage healthy stress management techniques such as mindfulness and taking breaks when needed. Support from friends, family, or school counselors can also provide valuable assistance during challenging times.

Seek support when needed

Remind your child to seek help if they encounter academic or emotional challenges. High school presents various support resources, including tutoring, counseling services, and mentorship programs. Encouraging them to reach out demonstrates maturity and reinforces their commitment to academic achievement.

Stay positive and flexible

Transitioning to high school entails navigating new experiences and challenges, which may include setbacks. Maintain a positive outlook, exhibit patience, and remain adaptable. Encourage your child to embrace these personal and academic growth opportunities throughout their high school journey.

Enjoy the journey

Amidst the academic pressures and extracurricular commitments, remember to cherish moments of joy and accomplishment. Celebrate milestones, whether big or small and create memories your child will treasure for years.

Transitioning to high school is an exciting time filled with opportunities for growth, learning, and self-discovery. As you embark on this new chapter with your child, embrace the diversity of experiences, challenges, and triumphs that high school brings. It’s a time of growth, discovery, and transformation for you and your child. So, buckle up for the ride ahead, savor the journey, and let’s support each other as we navigate the exciting years of high school together.

Candace Third
Candace Third was born and raised in Georgia but always dreamed she would one day live in Florida. She and her Florida Native husband met online (before it was the ‘in’ thing) and have been married for almost 16 years. They have 3 kids, their oldest and only son is beginning his college soccer career away from home in North Carolina.  Their oldest daughter is very active in church and is enrolled in virtual school and their youngest is not only a great scholar but keeps mom very busy with volleyball.   Being a stay at home mom allows her the independence and flexibility to keep up with her family’s packed schedule.  When she isn’t at different convention centers for volleyball tournaments or at the gym for practices, Candace and her girls are at Universal Studios.  One of the perks of living in Orlando is the convenience of being so close to the theme parks. Being a passholder allows them the freedom to go to the park very frequently and now that her kids are older she can enjoy one of her favorite things, the thrills of roller coasters!  Her biggest passions, aside from her family, are working on creative projects with her Cricut and interior decorating & organizing.
