Parents have so much on their plate these days while trying to balance work and home life. An easy way to tip the scale in favor of home life is to sign up your children for sports, activities, maybe even increase their screen time with electronic devices. But, as every seasoned parent knows, there comes a time when you’ll be competing for your child’s attention. You might be up against cheerleading practice, video games, sports, and yes…friends. This is where Girl Scouts can help.
Girl Scouts provides a safe environment where girls of all ages can make friends, have fun, find adventure, become leaders, and give back to their community all while earning badges and awards. Many girls enjoy earning the badges that become the physical representation of their accomplishments; like a gold star in a classroom, but also like a medal you’d get by running a 5k.
And it’s these wins, which increase over time, that help to develop a confident and proud young lady.
Now imagine you being part of the culmination of such accomplishments. That sense of completion for earning those badges is tied to the support you provided along the way. This is why so many Girl Scouts have very fond memories of their troop leaders and parents who were involved during their time in Girl Scouts.
We’re not saying it’ll be easy. Like with anything worth doing, it will take time and effort, but we promise, the end result will be worth it.
Tiffany Hauser has been involved with Girl Scouts of Citrus since 2018 with her two daughters ages 10 and 7, she says “We thought being a Girl Scout would be like joining any other after school activity, but we quickly learned it is so much more. The curriculum has been somewhat of a parenting handbook for us. We use the pillars to make sure our girls are well-rounded individuals by trying different things and then go more in-depth on subjects they gravitate towards. It’s important to us that the girls are their own people – not a reflection of our interests. The strategy of progressive learning seems obvious, but when to introduce certain topics and what to demonstrate has been key to who they are today.”
Like many new residents that call Central Florida their home, Jhoanis Perez was looking for something to get involved with, while spending time with her youngest daughter. She tells us that “Girl Scouts has played a pivotal role in strengthening my relationship with my teenage daughter. Through participating in Girl Scout activities, life skills training, the Cookie program, and earning badges together, we’ve shared countless meaningful moments that deepened our connection. This organization has not only fostered our personal growth but has also given us a platform to bond over shared experiences, making our relationship stronger.”
Anyone, at any age can be a Girl Scout. It’s an activity that mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, and really anyone can join. Girl Scouts of Citrus welcomes family members to get involved by becoming Girl Scouts themselves! Ever heard “…it takes a village to raise a child”? Well, we say it takes a troop. As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to be a troop leader or a parent helper. The important is that you’re there making memories and strengthening that special bond between you and your girl!
