GUEST SPEAKER: Randi Ballard
Randi ballard is first and foremost a mom of two girls, ages 7 and 9. She retired as a financial consultant in 2013 after 20 years in her practice when her first daughter was born. In 2017, only two years after her second daughters birth, she found out at age 39 she had a genetic mutation called BRCA 2, done through blood work. She attended a conference in Orlando that is geared towards learning about these genetic mutations, which is called FORCE (facing our risk of cancer empowered). In that time she learned that having this genetic mutation and family history she had a 78% chance of getting breast cancer. To her it was a matter of if not when!
In 2018, after 9 months of planning she decided to have a preventative double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. Later that year, her male cousin, Hal, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at age 44 and passed 4 months later, but they had learned later after his diagnosis he had the same family mutation. By the end of 2018, Randi decided to have a preventative unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy , removal of her tubes and one ovary due to the recent scare of her cousin.
Once her surgeries were behind her she wanted to give back and help those who will have to make decisions like she did. She went back to FORCE asked how she could join the cause and now is a peer counselor for the last 4 years empowering women and talking through the fears and concerns of the risks of cancer. She speaks with constituents across the country on a weekly basis and at many events. Her goal is to share her journey, explain the process , to stay on top of our health and to make others aware of how they can help advocate for themselves.
Randi had been married for 10 years to her husband Zachary. She grew up in the Orlando area and attended FSU for undergrad. She held a series 7,63 and insurance 215 license, and from the college of financial planning is an accredited asset management specialist. In her spare time she loves the beach, cruising and spending long walks with her English bulldog, Brutus.
