In the heart of Seminole County, The Sharing Center stands as a cornerstone of compassion and dignity. Since opening its doors in 1986, the nonprofit has become one of Central Florida’s most trusted resources for individuals and families facing poverty and homelessness. By providing immediate help and lasting solutions, The Sharing Center doesn’t just meet needs; it changes lives.

A mission rooted in compassion

The Sharing Center began with a simple but powerful mission: to provide dignified solutions for those experiencing poverty and homelessness. Originally established through the collaborative efforts of 17 local churches and organizations, The Sharing Center has grown into a comprehensive, multi-service resource serving over 50,000 people annually.

Guided by core values of dignity, respect, and empowerment, The Sharing Center delivers holistic care through its wraparound services. Programs address immediate basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, showers, and laundry services, as well as long-term stability through mental health counseling, workforce development, financial assistance, case management, tax services, ID services, and strong community partnerships.

Programs that make a difference

The Sharing Center’s impact comes from carefully designed programs tailored to meet individuals and families wherever they are in their journey toward self-sufficiency.

The Pantry: The Pantry is a vital resource for families facing food insecurity. Each family can receive two bags of nutritious groceries per family member every month, selected according to their preferences, providing dignity and ensuring they receive foods they genuinely need and enjoy. In addition to regular pantry visits, monthly food distributions held at local churches serve hundreds of families in a single day. The Sharing Center also provides special holiday meal distributions around Thanksgiving and Easter, offering additional support during these important times.

The Oasis: For those experiencing homelessness, The Oasis offers immediate relief and pathways to lasting stability. Services include hot showers, laundry services, hygiene kits, mail services, ID services, and tax services. Clients can also receive support connecting to rehabilitation programs as needed. Case managers are readily available, assisting clients in accessing resources for longer-term solutions like housing and healthcare.

ProjectRISE: ProjectRISE is a comprehensive five-week workforce development initiative that equips individuals with essential skills and support needed for gainful employment. The program includes workshops on financial literacy, emotional intelligence training, and job acquisition skills. Participants benefit from mock interviews, personalized case management, and direct job connections. Over 50% of those who completed the program in the two years have successfully found employment, while others remain actively engaged and supported in their job search.

Families in Crisis: The Families in Crisis program emphasizes compassionate case management to guide families toward stability. It provides targeted financial assistance for critical expenses, covering one month’s rent, utilities, or another major expense when a family faces homelessness yet shows potential for regaining stability. Additionally, families receive ongoing support through budgeting, financial planning, and access to essential community resources.

Mental Health Services: Recognizing mental health as integral to overall well-being, The Sharing Center offers accessible, no-cost counseling services. Clients receive professional support in a welcoming, stigma-free environment, addressing issues such as addiction, trauma, anxiety, depression, and stress related to financial hardships. Integrated into the organization’s holistic approach, these services assist clients in healing and rebuilding their lives.

A social enterprise that gives back

Maybe the most innovative aspect of The Sharing Center is its social enterprise model, known as the Village Shoppes. The Village Shoppes include a thrift shop, furniture store, and boutique, which generate revenue directly supporting the organization’s programs and operations. Community members and organizations generously donate goods, which are either provided at no cost to clients in need, sold to the community, or responsibly salvaged if unsellable due to factors like damage. Clients receive vouchers through outreach programs, allowing them the dignity to select the items they need. The Sharing Center celebrated the opening of its new furniture store on September 14, 2024, marking another significant milestone.

A community effort

The Sharing Center thrives due to its deep roots and active involvement in the community. Over 100 volunteers participate daily, supporting numerous onsite and offsite initiatives. Signature events like the Share the Light Gala and the Good Samaritan Luncheon collectively raise over $500,000 annually, significantly enhancing the organization’s ability to deliver vital services and programs.

Hope, dignity, and a path forward

At its core, The Sharing Center provides more than just immediate assistance – it restores dignity and hope through a comprehensive wraparound service model. By addressing a person’s physical, emotional, financial, and social needs, the organization treats every individual with compassion, respect, and empathy, breaking down the stigma surrounding poverty and homelessness. From food access, hygiene facilities, and financial assistance to mental health counseling, job readiness training, and personalized case management, The Sharing Center recognizes each person’s inherent value and potential, regardless of their circumstances.

Looking ahead

As Central Florida continues to grow, so does the demand for compassionate, holistic, community-based solutions to poverty. The Sharing Center remains committed to expanding its programs, strengthening partnerships, and proactively responding to emerging needs.

With every meal served, every family supported, and every life transformed, The Sharing Center moves closer to its vision: a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
