Orlando might be known for Mickey ears and butterbeer mustaches, but if you show up without sunscreen or extra socks, your magical vacation can take a not-so-magical turn real quick. As a mom who actually lives here (yes, I’ve done the theme parks in both monsoon-level rain and sauna-grade heat), let me walk you through what to pack for a family trip to Orlando — without overstuffing your suitcase or losing your mind.

The Orlando essentials: What to pack for a family trip to Orlando

Whether you’re conquering Cinderella Castle or chasing toddlers around a splash pad, here are the non-negotiables:

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing: Orlando weather is basically “hot with a chance of humid” nine months out of the year. Think moisture-wicking shirts, shorts, sundresses, and a couple of evening layers for indoor A/C arctic blasts. Bonus tip: quick-dry clothing can double as swimwear in a pinch.
  • Comfortable walking shoes: I cannot stress this enough: DO NOT attempt the parks in flip-flops unless you’re angling for a foot cramp souvenir. Go for broken-in sneakers or supportive sandals with good arch support. Your feet (and your sanity) will thank you.
  • Rain gear (trust me): Daily downpours are basically part of the Orlando welcome package. Pack compact ponchos, the plastic ones that roll up super small. Do NOT pack an umbrella or rain jackets. They’re too bulky, and the rain doesn’t last very long here.

Theme park-specific must-haves (from a local who’s done it all)

You’re probably hitting Disney, Universal, SeaWorld ,or Legoland— or, if you’re me, the holy trifecta in one month because school just got out and the kids are climbing the walls. Here’s what to pack for a family trip to Orlando that includes theme park survival:

Daypack with park gear

Load up a small backpack with:

  • Refillable water bottles (hydration = less meltdowns)

  • Snacks that won’t melt instantly (hi, granola bars!)

  • Travel-size sunscreen (yes, even on cloudy days)

  • Mini first-aid kit (hello, unexpected blisters)

  • Portable charger (because your phone is your map, camera, and lifeline)

Cooling towels & mini fans

They may seem silly when you’re packing, but these tiny gadgets are lifesavers in a midday meltdown moment. No one wants to spend $30 on a novelty misting fan while sweating in line for Space Mountain.

Bonus mom hacks to save space & stress

  • Pack swimwear even if you’re not “planning” to swim. Your hotel will have a pool, and your kids will beg. Trust me.

  • Ziplock bags are your new best friend. Use them for wet clothes, snacks, phone protection on water rides, and keeping masks or wipes clean.

  • The stroller. Leave it or bring it. Honestly, this depends on you. I have NO problem carrying my kids when they get a little tired. But I also start training them from very young; they have two perfectly good legs, and they can walk themselves. I personally hate lugging the stroller around. However, if you’re used to it, then definitely bring a lightweight, easily foldable stroller. You will have to leave it in the stroller park for every ride.

So there you have it — the not-so-glamorous, totally essential list of what to pack for a family trip to Orlando. Sure, you could wing it, but wouldn’t you rather be the mom smugly pulling out a poncho during a sudden storm while other parents panic-buy $15 plastic bags? Yeah. That’s the dream.

Now grab your packing cubes, toss in those Mickey ears, and remember: the most important thing you’re bringing is your sense of humor (and maybe an extra pair of socks).

According to Kattie, she has two rounds of children: first round are 15 and 11, and second round are 4 and 1.5. She was a teacher for 10 years and once she had baby #4 she decided it was time to find something that fit her crazy life as a snack [babe] and a chauffeur. During this time she decided to start a brand called SnackB*tchPodcast, which led to her owning a marketing business. During that time she helped clients tell their story through short-form and long-form writing, and she learned a lot about what it takes to truly connect with people. Kattie was born in Miami, grew up in Nicaragua, lived in Miami and Virginia for a bit, and now lives in the storybook city of Winter Garden. Her life has been adventurous and she welcomes change and everything that life has to offer. The one thing that stays constant is her love for coffee, reading, and drinking beer and wine. What she loves about Orlando is the outdoor seating at many breweries, the family-friendly vibes of many restaurants, and of course the nature. Growing up in Nicaragua she basically lived outside and enjoys that Orlando offers the same opportunities with its many hiking trails, lakes, and rivers. However, her favorite place with always be the beach. She currently loves visiting Sarasota but aspires to visit every Florida beach before her daughter goes off to college. One thing that life has taught Kattie is that you can only control what you can control and to let go of what you can’t. She’s excited for what’s to come and can’t wait to share that with Orlando Mom Collective and City Mom Collective. For along with her on SnackB*tchPodcast on Instagram and Spotify and listen to her raw and vulnerable observations, funny family moments, and most of all easy-to-follow cooking tips.
