A Parent’s Guide to Pediatric Dental Care: From City Beautiful Pediatric Dentistry

Last week, a mom walked into our office holding her toddler’s hand. It was his very first dental visit, and she admitted she hadn’t slept well the night before—not because her little one was anxious, but because she was. Would he cry? Would it be stressful? Would the dentist understand him? Within minutes of sitting down, he was smiling, holding a toy, and proudly showing us his “big kid” teeth. By the time they left, she said, “That wasn’t scary at all. I wish I had known sooner how gentle it could be.”

At City Beautiful Pediatric Dentistry, moments like these inspire everything we do. We believe that every child deserves to feel safe, respected, and cared for, and every parent deserves peace of mind.

When Should Your Child See the Dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling your child’s first visit by age one, or within six months of the first tooth erupting.

Pro Tip: Think of your child’s first dental visit like a “well-baby” checkup. It is about guidance, prevention, and confidence building.

What Is a Lip or Tongue Tie and Why It Matters

Sometimes, a dental visit is necessary in the very first weeks or months of life. A lip or tongue tie occurs when the thin band of tissue under the tongue or lip is tighter than usual.

Why does this matter? Lip and tongue ties can affect a baby’s ability to feed and swallow effectively, impact speech development later on, and even influence breathing patterns. These challenges can create stress for both baby and parents, which is why early evaluation and treatment are so important.

At City Beautiful Pediatric Dentistry, when ties cause difficulties, Dr. Danielle uses a gentle CO laser release. Unlike scissors or traditional surgical methods, the CO laser allows for incredible precision while minimizing bleeding, discomfort, and swelling. Most babies are able to feed right away after the procedure, and healing is typically very quick. Parents also appreciate that this method is less invasive and often avoids the need for stitches.

We often work hand-in-hand with lactation consultants, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, chiropractors, craniosacral therapists, and other bodyworkers to provide full-circle support. By addressing both the physical restriction and the functional skills (feeding, swallowing, speech, etc.), we help set children up for healthy growth and development.

Parent Insight: If nursing feels painful, or your baby struggles with latching, makes clicking sounds while feeding, or seems unusually gassy or fussy, it may be worth having an evaluation. Early support can make a big difference for your baby’s comfort, feeding success, and long-term development.

Brushing Basics for Kids

Brushing is the foundation of oral health, but kids need help for many years because they have not developed the proper manual dexterity to reach their back teeth. Parents should assist with brushing for their children until they are about eight or nine.

Pro Tip: Use a rice-sized smear of toothpaste once teeth erupt. Upgrade to a pea-sized amount around age three or four, once your child can spit reliably.

When to Start Flossing

Flossing should begin as soon as two teeth touch. Even if it is just one tiny space, flossing prevents cavities between teeth where toothbrushes cannot reach.

Pro Tip: Floss picks designed for kids make flossing easier and more fun. Parents usually need to floss for their children until they can tie their shoes.

Fluoride and Your Child’s Smile

Florida recently updated laws surrounding fluoride in the water supply, which has sparked questions for many parents. At City Beautiful Pediatric Dentistry, you are never required to use fluoride to be a patient here.

However, fluoride strengthens enamel and helps protect teeth from cavities. It can be especially beneficial for children at higher risk for decay.

Parent Insight: Think of fluoride as one tool in your toolbox. If you choose not to use it, we’ll work with you to find alternatives that keep your child’s smile strong.

Teething: What’s Normal, What’s Not?

Teething is a milestone every baby goes through, but it can leave parents wondering what’s normal and what isn’t. It’s common for little ones to be a bit fussy, drool more than usual, chew on their hands or toys, and have gums that look swollen or tender. Temporary changes in sleep or appetite are also part of the process and usually pass quickly.

What teething does not cause are high fevers, prolonged diarrhea, or severe ear pain. If your child experiences any of the following, it’s important to call your pediatrician:

  • Fever over 100.4°F
  • Ongoing diarrhea or vomiting
  • Rashes that spread beyond the chin
  • Severe ear tugging or pain

When it comes to comfort, a few simple tricks can make a big difference:

  • Chilled (not frozen) teething rings to soothe sore gums
  • Cold, damp washcloths for babies to chew on safely
  • Gentle gum massages with a clean finger
  • Frozen fruit/breastmilk/formula in a mesh feeder (for little ones already on solids)
  • Extra cuddles and patience are sometimes comfort is the best medicine

Most babies get their first teeth around six months, typically the bottom front teeth, though timing can vary widely. By age three, most children have a complete set of 20 baby teeth. Once teeth appear, it’s important to brush twice daily with a tiny smear of toothpaste to build healthy habits early.

At City Beautiful Pediatric Dentistry, we’re here to make every stage of your child’s smile journey less stressful and more joyful. If you’re ever unsure whether your baby’s discomfort is truly from teething, or something more, our team is always happy to guide you.

Speech, Oral Development, and Feeding: Why They’re Connected

Oral health affects far more than cavities. Tongue posture, jaw growth, and breathing patterns all shape speech, nutrition, and overall development.

Introducing the right feeding tools also plays a big role. Once your child is cleared to start solids, switching from bottles to open cups and straw cups supports proper tongue movement, lip positioning, and oral motor skills. These small habits encourage stronger jaw development, healthier swallowing patterns, and even clearer speech as your child grows.

Did You Know? Mouth breathing and tongue posture can influence how the jaw grows and how teeth align. Using open cups and straw cups early helps promote optimal oral posture and breathing patterns.

Compassionate Care for Kids of All Ages and Abilities

Every child deserves a dental experience that feels safe, supportive, and respectful. At City Beautiful Pediatric Dentistry, we treat kids of all ages and of all abilities. We proudly welcome children who are neurodivergent (such as children on the Autism Spectrum, with ADHD, or sensory processing differences), as well as children who experience OCD, high anxiety, or other mental health conditions. We also provide care for children with special health care needs or complex medical conditions, including developmental delays, genetic syndromes, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and other chronic health concerns. Our office was thoughtfully designed to be adaptable, with accommodations that may include:

  • Noise-reducing headphones
  • Dim lighting
  • Sunglasses
  • Weighted blankets & sensory kits
  • Sensory Fidgets
  • Visual schedules and timers for predictability
  • Collaboration with caregivers and medical teams for children with complex needs

Parent Insight: Sometimes, something as small as a weighted stuffed animal, dimmed lights, or a calm, predictable schedule can completely transform a child’s dental visit into a positive experience.

Helping Kids Respectfully at the Dental Office

Our philosophy is simple: every child deserves respect. We never rely on restraint or force. Instead, we build trust, offer choices, and move at your child’s pace.

Parents are always welcome in the room (with the exception of anesthesiology or certain laser procedures, where safety protocols may require otherwise). Your presence can be calming, and your involvement matters.

We know that early dental experiences can shape how children feel about the dentist for the rest of their lives. A visit that feels safe, supportive, and positive builds confidence and helps children grow into adults who view dental care as routine and even enjoyable,  not something to fear. That’s why we focus on respect, patience, and teamwork at every appointment.

Our goal is to create an environment where children feel understood, parents feel supported, and families leave with healthy smiles and lasting peace of mind.

Sedation in Pediatric Dentistry

For some children, additional support is needed to complete treatment safely and comfortably. At City Beautiful Pediatric Dentistry, we offer several levels of sedation tailored to your child’s needs:

  • Nitrous Oxide (“Laughing Gas”): A safe, mild option that helps children relax while staying awake and responsive. It wears off quickly, so kids bounce back right away.
  • In-Office IV Sedation: For children who need more support, we partner with board-certified dental anesthesiologists who provide IV sedation in our office, ensuring both safety and convenience.
  • Hospital or Surgical Center Referrals: Children with complex medical histories may be best treated in a hospital setting. We collaborate closely with specialists to coordinate care in these cases.

Parent Insight: Sedation is never a “one size fits all.” Together, we’ll review your child’s needs and medical history to choose the safest, most appropriate option.

Dental Insurance: What is it and how does it work?

Dental insurance is a benefit that helps reduce the cost of dental care, but it doesn’t work the same way as medical insurance. Think of it more like a savings plan or coupon, it helps cover costs for routine visits and certain treatments but doesn’t always cover everything. Each plan has its own rules about which dentists you can see, what services are included, and how much is paid.

Dental insurance can be confusing. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plans are the most flexible. Families have access to a wide range of in-network dentists, and in many cases, they can still receive partial coverage when seeing an out-of-network provider. This flexibility usually translates into more choices for specialists, modern techniques, and care that is truly tailored to a child’s needs.
  • HMO and DHMO plans, on the other hand, are more restrictive. These plans typically require families to stay within a very small network of providers, and coverage is often limited to only the treatments the plan approves. Because of this, options for the highest-quality or most up-to-date care can feel restricted.
  • Medicaid in Florida is the most restrictive in terms of types of treatment covered, which makes it difficult for the provider to offer the most up-to-date care. Coverage under Medicaid may also be limited in terms of the types of services included. By Florida law, private practices that are not enrolled with Medicaid cannot submit claims on a family’s behalf and will need to utilize the self-pay rates.

At City Beautiful Pediatric Dentistry, our team explains all your options, helps you understand how insurance works, and makes sure you feel confident in every decision.

City Beautiful Pediatric Dentistry’s Insurance Policy

We understand that dental insurance restrictions can be frustrating, especially when your plan isn’t one that we’re able to accept. Not all insurance plans are the same, some offer broader coverage and flexibility, while others have stricter limits on which treatments are included. These differences can sometimes impact access to the latest techniques or the full range of pediatric dental options.

At City Beautiful Pediatric Dentistry, we accept many PPO plans and will submit claims on your behalf as a courtesy. Before every visit, our team verifies your benefits and provides a clear estimate so there are no surprises. If your PPO plan is out of network, we can check for out-of-network coverage and still submit claims for you. Our office is not in network with HMO, DHMO, or Medicaid plans. We also offer competitive self-pay rates for families without dental insurance or out-of-network benefits.

By partnering with PPO plans, we’re able to give families more flexibility and maintain the high standards of care every child deserves. Even if we are not in-network with your specific plan, we will always be transparent about costs, provide detailed estimates before treatment, and help you maximize your benefits.

While many providers are moving away from insurance networks, our commitment remains the same: to expand access to care while upholding the highest quality and experience for your family.

Parent Insight: Ultimately, dental insurance is best viewed like a coupon, rather than a guarantee, coverage decisions are made by your plan.
