What makes Great Wolf Lodge the ultimate family getaway from Orlando for kids in elementary and middle school?
Many of the features at Great Wolf Lodge are perfect for ages 2-5, but the fun is really designed for kids all the way up to teenagers to enjoy. Our family has a 3rd grader (9) and a 7th grader (13) which has recently made vacations a bit of a challenge because they have different interests, but Great Wolf Lodge is a great value because it offers something for everyone.
My 9 year old is not a fan of huge water slides and rides, but my 13 year old is, and we get the best of both worlds at Great Wolf Lodge. Surprisingly, they both loved the entire waterpark, lazy river and wave pool, making it easy for our family!
Recently we visited the Great Wolf Lodge in Naples, Florida for a long weekend. Several friends asked me if Great Wolf Lodge was worth it (specifically for teens). Here’s a quick guide with a breakdown of fun for a child and a teenager at Great Wolf Lodge. I was pleasantly surprised with the number of older kids I saw! SO many families with “big kids” were making this their spring break getaway too!
What Makes Great Wolf Lodge pools feel safe? Good to note: Their lifeguards go through rigorous training, and they have lifeguards stationed watching the water at every pool. To assist their lifeguards, they have a high-tech water safety system that leverages AI technology to further assist lifeguards in monitoring the water.
Plus, they are constantly monitoring the water quality so we can relax and focus on having fun!
I love the focus and attention on CLEANLINESS and SAFETY!

What are the best tips for making the most of your Great Wolf Lodge stay?
A trip to Great Wolf Lodge is so much fun for the whole family! They offer so many activities and the waterpark is included with every stay.
- Arrive Early and Stay Late
One of the best hidden perks is that water park access is included on both check-in and check-out days.
That means you can:
- Arrive when the water park opens
- Enjoy a full day of swimming before your room is ready
- Swim again the day of checkout before heading home
The outdoor pool area is like a resort, including lounge chairs inside the pool. You can also reserve private cabanas (either inside the water park or by the outdoor pool) that serve as a home base for the day. Cabanas include a fridge, couch, and even a TV! The cabanas offer a private, comfortable retreat right along the water park floor where you can take a break, enjoy snacks, or relax between rides without having to go to your room.
And if a cabana isn’t part of the plan, there are still plenty of comfortable lounge chairs throughout the water park so everyone has a place to sit back and enjoy the fun!
For families driving from Orlando, this essentially gives you two full water park days for the price of one night. Stay two nights and you get 3 full days of activities!

How easy is it to get to Great Wolf Lodge from Orlando, and what makes it a perfect drivable weekend destination for families?
For families in Central Florida, the drive from Orlando to Great Wolf Lodge Naples is surprisingly simple and manageable for a quick getaway.
The Drive from Orlando
The resort is about 4 hours by car from Orlando (depending on traffic).
Most families take I-75 across Alligator Alley, which is a straight, easy drive across South Florida with minimal turns. Once you reach Naples, the lodge sits right off the highway near the I-75 and Collier Boulevard interchange, making it easy to find.
For Orlando families, that distance makes it perfectly doable for a one-night or two-night trip.
Why is Great Wolf Lodge Ideal for a Weekend Trip?
One of the biggest reasons Great Wolf Lodge works so well for a quick family getaway is that everything is in one place. The resort includes a massive indoor water park, restaurants, family activities, and entertainment all under one roof, so you don’t have to drive anywhere once you arrive.
That means your weekend can look like this:
Friday
- Leave Orlando after school or work
- Arrive in Naples around dinner time
- Explore the resort and evening activities
Saturday
- Full day enjoying the indoor water park and attractions
Sunday
- One more morning of swimming before heading back to Orlando
Because the water park is included with your stay and open on both arrival and departure days, families can squeeze a lot of fun into a short visit.

Is Great Wolf Lodge Naples Worth It for Older Kids?
Many parents wonder if Great Wolf Lodge is better for little kids, but we found there was plenty to keep our 9 and 13 year old entertained.
For older kids and tweens, the biggest hits were the thrill water slides and competitive rides.
Some of the favorites included:
Rapid Racer
Kids race side-by-side down mat slides to see who hits the bottom first.
Forest Flume
A fast body slide with twists that older kids love.
River Canyon Run
A big family raft ride where everyone rides together.
Beyond the water park, older kids also gravitate toward the activity zone.
Top picks for tweens and teens:
- Northern Lights Arcade
- Ten Paw Alley bowling
- Howl-in-One mini golf
Parent takeaway:
If you’re traveling with kids 8 and up, they’ll have plenty to do beyond the splash areas designed for little ones.
Everything My 9 and 13 Year Old Loved Most
After two full days at Great Wolf Lodge, these were the clear winners for my kids.
- Racing the Water Slides
Rapid Racer became a repeat ride because the kids could race each other.
- The Lazy River
The lazy river is a relaxing float around the park and a nice break between slides…they were in and out of this quiet a bit!
- The Wave Pool
The wave pool was one of the most popular spots in the park. The waves come in cycles, and kids love jumping over them and body surfing.
- Mini Bowling
The boys were hooked on bowling! It is unlimited with the Food & Fun pass, so they were in there a lot!
What I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Great Wolf Lodge
After visiting, there were a few things I wish I had known before arriving.
Water Park Access Starts Before Check-In
You can access the water park the day you arrive before your room is ready, which means you can get a full day of fun even if you only stay one night.
Bring Closed Toe Shoes
You need closed toe shoes to do the zipline and ropes course! I could not participate because I only brought sandals.
Check the Daily Activity Schedule
Great Wolf Lodge hosts free activities throughout the day, including:
- Story time
- Character appearances
- Dance parties
- Kids games
These are easy to miss if you don’t check the schedule.
Pack Water Shoes
Walking between pools and slides can be slippery, and water shoes make things much easier for kids.
Ask About Activity Times
Bowling closes at 10p but they stop letting in guests at 9:30p, make a note because if you want to late night bowl, you’ll be happy to know this!
