Okay, mama. Pull up a chair. The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex just announced their full Summer of Exploration lineup, and y’all — this is not a regular summer at KSC. This is a very big summer at KSC.
Why? It’s the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. And Kennedy Space Center — the literal place where America has launched generations of astronauts into space — is going all-in on celebrating it.
The whole month of July is packed with themed weekends, astronaut meet-and-greets, drone shows, a 60th anniversary bus tour celebration, a 250-prize giveaway, and a Moon Fest. And the best part? It’s only 45 minutes from Orlando. This is literally in our backyard.
If you’ve been looking for THE summer outing to put on the family calendar — something patriotic, something educational, something that’s going to make the kids talk about it for years — this is it.
Let me break down the whole lineup so you can start planning.
The Big Picture
Kennedy Space Center is celebrating America’s 250th anniversary with a Summer of Exploration full of family-friendly events from July 1 through August 2, 2026. Every event listed below is included with regular park admission unless otherwise noted, which is huge.
Therrin Protze, COO of Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, said it well: “As our nation marks its 250th anniversary, there is no better place to reflect on America’s achievements in exploration and innovation than here at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, where history has been made for generations and the future of spaceflight continues to unfold, every day.”
That’s not marketing fluff — that’s actually true. Our kids are growing up 45 minutes from a place that has launched astronauts to the Moon. Let’s act like it.
The Full July + Early August Event Lineup

The iconic Kennedy Space Center Bus Tour is turning 60. Throughout July, expect commemorative bus decals, themed photo ops, collectible pins, enhanced VIP and Explore Tour experiences, and nostalgic tributes to six decades of bus-tour history.
If you’ve never done the bus tour with your kids — this is the year. It’s the closest you can get to actual launch pads on Earth.
🇺🇸 All-American Block Party | July 3–5, 2026
Independence Day weekend at Kennedy Space Center — say less. Expect:
- A live DJ in NASA Central daily from noon to 4 p.m.

🚀 STS-135 Anniversary — Atlantis’ Last Flight | July 10–12, 2026
This one is for the space geeks (and the moms raising them). The weekend commemorates STS-135 — the final mission of Space Shuttle Atlantis and the final flight of NASA’s entire Space Shuttle Program back in July 2011.
Expect:
- Astronaut meet-and-greets with confirmed STS-135 astronauts Chris Ferguson, Sandy Magnus, Rex Walheim, and Doug Hurley* (yes, you read that right — REAL astronauts)
- Fireside chats
- An astronaut panel hosted by former Shuttle Launch Director Mike Leinbach
- Annual passholder-exclusive astronaut experiences
- A commemorative banner signing for guests
- A patriotic drone show on the evening of July 11
- Evening viewing experiences and themed nighttime offerings
If your kid has ever pointed at the sky and asked how astronauts get up there — book it. Meeting an astronaut in person is one of those memories they will never, ever forget.
Note: Check the events calendar for confirmed astronaut appearances throughout the weekend. The Space Shuttle Atlantis attraction will pause during select live astronaut programming.
🌙 Moon Fest | July 17–19, 2026
It’s the 57th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing, and Kennedy Space Center is leaning all the way into it with a vintage-inspired Moon Fest weekend. Guests are encouraged to wear “Vintage Chic” retro outfits (mama, get the kids’ retro space onesies ready), and the weekend includes:
- Lunar rover photo ops at the Apollo/Saturn V Center
- Hands-on activities inside Space Shuttle Atlantis — coloring sheets, build-your-own Orion splashdown capsule crafts
- Apollo-to-Artemis presentations by visitor complex experts inside Journey To Mars
- Appearances by Astro and Orbit — the all-American space comedy duo
- Interactive educational experiences across both Apollo and Artemis programs
- Commemorative America 250-themed pin giveaways
This is the sweet spot for younger kids who love space stuff. Lots of hands-on, lots of color, lots of “look mom, I made a capsule!” energy.

My Honest Orlando Mom Take
Here’s the thing. We live so close to one of the most extraordinary places in the country, and most of us only go there once when our kids are five and then forget about it for a decade. This summer is the chance to fix that.
We have:
- 250 years of American history being celebrated
- 60 years of the Kennedy Space Center Bus Tour being celebrated
- A return to the Moon happening in real time with the Artemis program
- A literal Independence Day weekend block party at NASA
- A drone show
- Real astronauts you can MEET
- A 250-prize giveaway happening all month
And it’s 45 minutes from your house.
Orlando Mom Pro Tips Before You Go

- Pack snacks and refillable water bottles. Standard Orlando-mom move.
- Bring patience for the bus tour line in July. It’s the 60th anniversary — it’s going to be busy. Get there early.
- Check the calendar for confirmed astronaut appearances the morning of, especially for STS-135 weekend.
- Stack this with our Ultimate Guide to Summer if you’re piecing together the rest of your season.
A Final Word for the Mom Who Needed a Sign
If you’ve been looking for one summer outing that’s worth the hype — patriotic, educational, family-friendly, budget-doable, and unforgettable — Kennedy Space Center’s Summer of Exploration is it.
Our kids will remember the day they met an astronaut. They will remember the day they saw a lunar rover. They will remember the drone show over Cape Canaveral on a July night, the year America turned 250.
We have an entire month to make that memory. Let’s not waste it.
